Power System Studies

Power system studies encompass a range of analyses, including arc flash studies for safety, power flow studies for grid performance, short circuit and coordination studies for fault handling, and harmonic analysis to maintain power quality. These studies are crucial for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electrical power systems. KLS offers the following services for power system studies:

1. Arc Flash studies both DC and AC using SKM, ETAP and ARC Pro: Arc flash studies are conducted using software tools like SKM, ETAP, and ARC Pro. These studies assess the potential hazards of arc flashes in both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems.

2. Power Flow Study: Load flow analysis examine the steady-state behavior of a power system. These studies calculate voltage levels, active and reactive power flows, and help ensure the grid operates within acceptable equipment limits under various load conditions.

3. Short Circuit and Coordination Study: Short circuit studies evaluate the behavior of a power system under fault conditions, determining fault currents at different locations. Coordination studies ensure that protective devices, such as circuit breakers and relays, coordinate effectively to isolate faults while minimizing disruptions to the rest of the system.

4. Harmonic analysis: Harmonic analysis studies distortions typically caused by nonlinear loads and power electronic devices which adversely impact power quality. Using software tools like SKM and ETAP, harmonic analysis identifies harmonics and their potential impact on equipment, helping maintain power quality and equipment reliability.

5. Dynamic/Transient Studies: As covered in the Electromagnetic Transient Studies section, these studies are crucial in analyzing the dynamic behavior of electrical systems during transient events, and ensure reliability and safety. See the Electromagnetic Transient Studies section or further details.

6. Automation: Often when performing studies on large power systems, it’s important to use efficient automation techniques using tailored scripts with the use of platforms such as Python, Visual Basic, JavaScript, etc., to make large-scale studies possible with the minimum use of time and resources.
